“The Stamford Reliability Cable Project continues CL&P’s strong track record of making targeted investments to improve our system,” said Dwayne Basler, vice president of transmission projects, engineering & maintenance for Northeast Utilities, parent company of CL&P.

“These investments ensure reliable, cost-effective energy for our customers and support the continued economic growth in southwest Connecticut.”

The 1.5-mile project route threads through downtown, and important commuter rail and highway corridors, connecting two existing substations in the Glenbrook and South End neighborhoods. It took nine months to complete the work.

The busy residential and commercial areas where the work was done presented challenges for the CL&P project team, the utility said.

Among those challenges were: tunneling under the Metro-North Railroad right-of-way to avoid impacts to commuters; routing around the Stamford Urban Transitway, the city’s roadway improvement project between East Main and Atlantic streets; and customizing street work hours to minimize impacts to residential and business neighbors

The project is part of a series of upgrades to CL&P’s electric system in Stamford and the surrounding area. The utility said these projects will improve service reliability and meet growing demand.
