With high temps hitting 102 degrees, you're probably desperate to find a not-so-hot spot for spending the day. Here are our top five picks for in-town cooling down:
Stamford Town Center
Of course the mall is first on our list, for obvious reasons. It's big, air-conditioned, and offers a variety of distractions, from window-shopping for mom to tackling the top floor's indoor playground for the kids. With a little willpower, this can even be a free excursion (or cheap-ish).
Bow Tie Cinemas Majestic 6/Landmark 9
A visit to either of downtown's multiplexes is a no-brainer way to kill a couple of hours in the cold. For a real chill, check out "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse" (there's a great scene on a snowy mountain top sure to take you away).
The Ferguson Library
All of the Stamford Public Libary's branches have one important thing in common: temperature control. Plus, a session at the library is absolutely free and without time limits, so you can settle in with a stack of bestsellers until sundown. The Main Branch even has a Starbucks.
You know your favorite. You might want to choose a shop that has an air-conditioned spot to cool off while you wait. There's Gofer on High Ridge Road and Baskin-Robbins on Broad Street, among others.
Okay, we know it's boring and you need a change of scenery, but consider for a moment the possibilities for beating the heat right at home (assuming, of course, you have air-conditioning. Otherwise, hightail it to one of our above suggestions). Rent an armload of DVDs and have a movie marathon. Take a field trip to Michael's for art supplies and embark on an all-day project. Take on one of those around-the-house tasks you've been putting off, like cleaning out the bedroom closet or organizing your desk.
Whatever you do, drink up! Water, lemonade, frozen margaritas...you'll be chilling in no time.
