STAMFORD, Conn. -- An aquatic safety consulting company will be brought in to Chelsea Piers in Stamford this weekend to review safety procedures and train lifeguards after a 5-year-old New Canaan boy nearly drowned this month, according to the Stamford Advocate.

The boy almost drowned while swimming in the pool at Chelsea Piers on Aug. 3. Chelsea Piers staff pulled the boy from the water after he underwater for nearly three minutes, and performed CPR on him, according to fire officials. The boy was unconscious for more than a day before waking up and making a recovery.

Chelsea Piers announced to its members that when it closes for maintenance this Labor Day weekend, the aquatic safety consulting company Ellis & Associates will be brought in to implement its International Lifeguard Training Program, the Stamford Advocate reported. It will begin training lifeguards and managers and implementing best practices, according to the Stamford Advocate.

The near drowning is still under investigation, and police have not made a decision yet on whether to charge the lifeguard who was on duty, according to the Stamford Advocate.
