Breast Cancer Survivors Walk Stamford Runway

STAMFORD, Conn. — The hottest fall fashions were on display at Saks Fifth Avenue in Stamford Wednesday, but instead of using models, the store used breast cancer survivors and their doctors to show off the latest styles.

“It’s a lot of fun,” said Melissa Iacovacci of Norwalk, who was diagnosed a year ago. She did admit to being nervous, but her tensions were relieved when her daughter ran up to her and made the way down the runway with her mother.

“We really get pampered,” said Ronni Ginsberg of Stamford, a 23-year survivor, of how they all get their make-up and hair done. She also said the fashion show is great to help build the camaraderie among all of the breast cancer survivors in the area.

“It’s a celebration,” Ginsberg said.

It’s the seventh year that the fashion show was a part of the Paint the Town Pink campaign and was added to give the campaign a “little more punch,” said Michelle Palazzo, patient services coordinator for the Stamford Hospital Carl & Dorothy Bennett Cancer Center.  Palazzo added that the event allows the doctors and patients to see each other outside of the hospital.

In addition to hosting Wednesday’s event, Saks’ will also have its 2012 Key to the Cure, a sale where 2 percent of all sales from Thursday, Oct. 18 through Sunday, Oct. 21 will be donated to Stamford Hospital’s Mobile Mammography Program, a news release said.

The store will also be selling a limited edition “ Key To The Cure ” t-shirt designed by Carolina Herrera and donate 100 percent of the purchase price of each shirt sold to local charities.

Paint the Town Pink is sponsored by Stamford Hospital and other community organization to hold events to stress the importance of screening and early detection. Visit the organization’s website to see upcoming events .
