Greenwich Animal Control Division has been advised of the sighting, police told Patch.com. Residents are warned to avoid contact with bears and to report any sightings, the story said.

The bear spotting was a rare occurrence in town: In the past year, only two bear sightings in Greenwich have been reported to the Connecticut Department of Energy & Environmental Protection. In stamford, there have been six bear sightings reported in the past 12 months.

There are a number of steps residents can take to deter bears near their homes, especially since bears are attracted to garbage, pet food, compost piles, fruit trees, and birdfeeders.

Residents should remove birdfeeders and bird food from late March through November.

Also, place garbage cans inside a garage or shed. Add ammonia to trash to make it unpalatable.

Clean and store grills in a garage or shed after use.

Don't intentionally feed bears. Bears that become accustomed to finding food near your home may become problem bears.

Don't approach or try to get closer to a bear to get a photo or video.

Don't leave pet food outside overnight.

Don't add meat or sweets to a compost pile.
