Beat The Heat: Stamford Opens Cooling Centers During Heat Wave

STAMFORD, Conn. -- As the first extended heat wave of the summer settles in, the City of Stamford opened cooling stations Tuesday to help residents deal with the heat.

The designated cooling centers, open from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Friday, are located at:

  • the Stamford Government Center at 888 Washington Blvd.,
  • the Fire Department Headquarters at 629 Main St., and
  • the Long Ridge Fire Company at 366 Old Long Ridge Road.

The city is also recommending that residents head to public areas such as the library, shopping centers and Stamford Town Center that have air conditioning in order to cool down.

Stamford's Director of Health and Social Services Anne Fountain is also recommending that residents take basic safeguards such as drinking fluids that are non-alcoholic, non-caffeinated and non-sugary as those drinks cause loss of body fluid.

Residents are also urged to watch out for signs of heatstroke such as skin that is hot and dry with red spots, an increased body temperature, mental confusion and convulsions. Call 911 if these symptoms are noticed in anyone.

Residents are urged to stay indoors in air conditioned buildings and to know that electric fans will no prevent heat-related illness if the temperature is in the mid-90s. 

Residents are also urged never to leave anyone or pets in a closed, parked vehicle.
