$25 Million Project Will Bring Natural Gas To New Canaan Customers

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – Eversource and the town of New Canaan have reached an agreement to expand the gas distribution system in town, with Eversource planning to invest more than $25 million over the next three years to make the clean-burning and affordable fuel available in the community.

“This project in New Canaan is another example of our efforts to make natural gas available to more communities across Connecticut,” said Eversource President of Gas Operations Bill Akley. “We continue to hear from more and more people who want access to this efficient and environmentally-friendly fuel to heat their homes or businesses, and we’re working hard to make it happen.”

The New Canaan gas expansion project will initially involve the installation of 4.7 miles of underground pipeline along a proposed route that includes State Route 106 and South Avenue (Route 124) to connect natural gas to New Canaan’s downtown business district, New Canaan High School, Saxe Middle School, South Elementary School, Waveny Care Center and the New Canaan YMCA.

“A lot of hard work and conversations took place to make this happen and I am delighted that natural gas expansion is here,” said New Canaan First Selectman Rob Mallozzi. “It is a tremendous opportunity for our community and one that will benefit us for many years to come.”

Eversource plans to hold neighborhood forums beginning later this summer to provide project details and information on the natural gas conversion process. Once construction is underway, Eversource says it works cooperatively with community leaders and customers to minimize the impact to traffic and coordinate with other roadwork happening in the area.

New customers will be able to use natural gas for home heating, water heating, clothes drying, cooking, as well as barbecuing, fueling fire pits, and heating swimming pools and hot tubs. Eversource says that natural gas is cleaner, with 30 percent less CO2 and 99 percent less sulfur than heating oil.
