The award, which has been given every year since 1945 to a total of 70 men and women, was bestowed upon Curtin as “a person who, in the opinion of the Selection Committee, has demonstrated a belief in interfaith harmony, possesses the highest standards of responsibility in civic life, has helped in the promotion of projects for the public welfare and who has personally worked with distinction to benefit Stamford on a community-wide basis."

Beginning in the mid-1960s when Curtin and his family moved to Stamford and he was working in the legal department of CIBA-Geigy (now Novartis), he began demonstrating his commitment to public service.

Over the past five decades, Curtin has served in a series of leadership positions in city government from the Planning Board, the Stamford Fire Commission and the Stamford Water Pollution Control Authority to the Stamford Cultural Development Corp., the Stamford Partnership and the Leadership Council of Success by Six.

After retiring from CIBA-Geigy in the mid-1990s as vice president, corporate relations, Curtin served on Mayor Dannel Malloy’s transition team and cabinet as unsalaried special assistant.

For five years he spearheaded key municipal projects, such as funding for the reconstruction of the Palace Theatre and jump starting the Mill River initiative. Appointed director of operations in 2000, Tim’s tenure is highlighted by his efforts to save Old Town Hall, build four new parks, and not only saving the WPA Daugherty Murals, but by promoting public art throughout the City.

In 2007, Curtin left the Office of Operations and returned to the position of unsalaried assistant to the mayor. He continues to serve the city as a dollar-a-year man and supervises special projects.

Two upcoming events will celebrate the 2013 Citizen of the Year. The first is when Curtin’s plaque is added to those past recipients previously honored at Town Hall, and the second is the 69th annual Stamford Citizen of the Year dinner which will be held this coming May.

“There are few citizens who have dedicated as much of their time, energy and passion to the community as Tim Curtin," Stamford Mayor David Martin said in a statement. "He has set an example for all of us in public service. Each time Stamford has asked Tim to serve, he has stepped up and done an outstanding job, said Mayor David Martin, I am proud to join the Committee in recognizing Tim with the Stamford Citizen of the Year Award.”
