AmeriCares stores the kits in the warehouse in Stamford to distribute to families in the U.S. who are displaced by tornadoes, hurricanes, flooding or other emergencies. The kits contain soap, shampoo and other personal items for a family of four.

AmeriCares officials say they respond to about 30 emergencies each year. The organization helps people not only recover after an emergency but prepare as well.

#GivingTuesday, started in 2012, is a nationwide celebration of giving on the Tuesday following Black Friday and Cyber Monday. On #GivingTuesday, people are encouraged to use social media to spread the message about giving, and to show the many ways to help those in need.
