Volunteers will be trained how to properly fit and adjust the bike helmets for children. The bike helmet giveaway will be from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Fairway Market, 699 Canal St., for children ages 4-16, with a limited number of toddler sizes available.

The bike helmet giveaway was started in 1995 by now retired police officer Glenn Coppola and his wife, Peggy, in honor of their son Timothy, who was hit by a car while riding a bike in 1992. It was the first time ever that Timothy was not wearing a bike helmet. He suffered severe brain damage and died 22 months later at age 10.

“The Stamford Police Association is honored to continue our work with the Timothy Coppola Bike Helmet Giveaway for the 21st year. Accidents happen, and this program enhances the safety of Stamford’s children,” said Todd Lobraico, president of the Stamford Police Association.

Since the Coppola family began efforts to prevent similar tragedies from occurring to other families, an estimated 35,000 helmets have been given out to youngsters.
