Students Of All Ages Pitch In To Rebuild Stamford Park

STAMFORD, Conn. -- The Stamford Public Education Foundation sponsored a park cleanup and rebuilding project Saturday at Cedar Street Park.

The park is located at 11 Cedar St., between Ludlow and Henry streets, in Stamford’s South End.

The work was done in cooperation with The University of Connecticut-Stamford, Newfield Elementary School, Hart Magnet Elementary School and the City of Stamford's Recreation Division.

The foundation partners with UConn-Stamford to deliver a Service-Learning program to fifth grade students at Newfield and Hart Magnet. The program engages 26 UConn students from two courses, The Family School Partnership and Low-Income Families, both taught by Human Development Professor Monica Miller-Smith.

University students serve as mentors to more than 90 fifth grade students at Hart. Earlier in the school year they mentored 87 fifth grade students at Newfield.

During weekly mentoring sessions, mentors and mentees discuss topics related to service learning - including civic engagement, community service, and leadership. Both groups of students, along with their parents/guardians, participated in the park project.

Activities included general cleaning, removing old plants, replacing a basketball net, painting asphalt games, and building a chalkboard wall.
