Stars Come Out to Benefit Stamford Charity

STAMFORD, Conn. – Stamford-based AmeriCares raised $1.4 million for relief efforts around the world at its star-studded 24th Annual AmeriCares Airlift Benefit on Saturday. The organization provides aid to 90 countries.

Mika Brzezinski of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” emceed the sold-out event. She was joined by Bobby Valentine, former manager of the New York Mets and Stamford’s director of public health and safety, and actor Aaron Eckhart, whose credits include “Thank You for Smoking” and “The Dark Knight.”

“We are grateful to have such loyal supporters who, year after year, make this a memorable and meaningful event,” AmeriCares President and CEO Curt Welling said in a press release. “The proceeds from the gala ensure we have the resources to send aid whenever and wherever it’s needed around the globe.”

The benefit adopted the theme “Humanity in Action." It attracted over 700 people to the Panorama Hangar at the Westchester County Airport and concluded with 75 people hopping in a plane and heading to the Dominican Republic to observe AmeriCares in action.
