The young women in attendance had each earned a Girl Scout Silver Award or Girl Scout Gold Award.

The Silver Award is the highest honor a Girl Scout ages 11 to 14 can earn, while the Gold Award is the highest honor a Girl Scout ages 14 to 18 can earn. The Gold Award is equivalent to the Eagle Scout award in Boy Scouts.

The group took a tour of the Capitol and spoke with elected officials, including state Rep. Caroline Simmons (D-Stamford) and Lt. Gov. Nancy Wyman.

“You’re the future leaders,” Wyman said at the April 29 event, according to a press release. “Make sure to get yourselves out there and push for who you really want to be and do what you believe is right.

“Speak out for what you believe in and fight for what you want. You’re part of Girl Scouts of Connecticut – there can’t be a better family out there to support you.”

Gustafson’s project entailed creating a team to help beautify Bennett Park. The volunteers completed many tasks, including weeding, repairing a flagpole and building picnic tables.

The “Lunch with Your Legislator” day ended with the Scouts pinning several legislators and other elected officials as members of the Girl Scouts of Connecticut.

“This was a wonderful opportunity for our girls to not only see our state Capitol, but also meet women who are powerful, influential leaders,” Mary Barneby, CEO of Girl Scouts of Connecticut, said in a press release. “It also gave our legislators and representatives the opportunity to meet our Girl Scouts and see how committed the girls are to making the world a better place.”
