The program, part of the Stamford Peace Basketball Club, will continue to offer highly subsidized, one-on-one tutoring and informal mentoring, as well as summer enrichment activities, for middle and high school students.
The program offers math and science tutoring sessions.
“Research shows that many children experience a significant loss of academic skills over the summer break,” said Andy Sklover, co-founder of the Beyond Limits program, in a press release. “For economically disadvantaged children in particular, these losses become cumulative. That’s why we felt it was important to continue our academic programming over the summer months.”
Tutoring is conducted by Stamford Public Schools’ upperclassmen, including National Honor Society members, who are referred by teachers, administrators, and fellow students, according to a press release.
Sessions are scheduled weekday afternoons and evenings. One-hour sessions are conducted in a tutoring room equipped with computers, school supplies and reference books at 925 Long Ridge Road.
Subsidized tutoring fees range from $4-$15 per hour, with discounts for Stamford Public Schools students, as well as players within the Stamford Peace Basketball Club. Students who are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch pay $4 per hour for tutoring.
In addition to the summer tutoring program, Beyond Limits will offer its participants a free, interactive enrichment event from 5-6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 13.
With its mission to “bring life to education,” Animal Embassy is partnering with Beyond Limits to present live animals, potentially including the Eurasian eagle owl, an African sulcata tortoise, the South American chinchilla, red-eyed tree frogs and more. Students will learn about the diverse habitats of these animals and the challenges they face, as well as conservation issues, according to a press release.
They also will discuss how the animals confront these challenges in ways similar to humans. Students participating in the Beyond Limits program also receive a monthly email newsletter containing important updates, announcements and invitations to special events.
