STAMFORD, Conn. -- Seven years ago Stamford’s Sharon McCarthy Feighery saw an ad in her church bulletin about Malta House. They were seeking volunteers for different capacities.

Malta House opened in 1998 and is a 501(c)3 corporation in East Norwalk. Its mission is to promote the dignity of God-given life by providing a nurturing home environment, support services and independent living skills to pregnant and parenting mothers of all faiths and their children. Since its inception, 285 babies and 248 mothers resided, were protected and were served at Malta House and their outreach program has provided diapers, formula, toys and clothing to 214 families.

Feighery, who has been a Malta House board member for four years, was born and raised in Stamford. She is a former teacher and still resides in town with her husband of 48 years. She has five grown children and 14 grandchildren. She started volunteering seven years ago by cooking dinner for the residents once a month and for the last five years has hosted a Christmas party in her home for about 40 friends, all of whom bring gifts for the moms and their children of Malta House. “Everyone is very generous. This has become a tradition and it’s very rewarding and fun to do,’’ Feighery said.

On Wednesday, Dec. 9 at 7:30 pm, Malta House will be hosting The New York Tenors at The Palace Theater in Stamford. Feighery, who has seen The New York Tenors a few times over the years, thought it would be a great way to raise money for Malta House. When she mentioned the idea to her friend and lifelong Stamford resident, Joanne Salvatore, the two agreed to co-chair the event.

Feighery and Salvatore have been fundraising for over 30 years for various causes such as St. Joseph’s Hospital Auxiliary, Stamford Catholic High School (Trinity Catholic High School), New Covenant House and St. Camillus. “Business owners probably cringe when they see us enter their establishments,’’ said Feighery.

The support from local businesses and individuals has been incredible. All of them will be recognized at the event at The Palace. First County Bank is their largest supporter. “They are extremely generous to many charitable organizations in our community. They were the first business we approached and we received $10,000 from them,” Feighery said.

Feighery and Salvatore are still soliciting sponsors. For information, call Malta House at 203-857-0088. Tickets are available and can be purchased from Malta House. Tickets are $150 per person and include a reception at the Palace catered by Columbus Park Trattoria and tickets for the show in the first several rows of the center section. For show tickets only, call the Palace Theater box office at 203-325-4466 or go to palacestamford.org.
