STAMFORD, Conn. – State Sen. Carlo Leone honored three local veterans Saturday at the MLK Day of Service at Trailblazers Academy.

Leone honored the veterans during a festive event that also included poetry readings, live hip hop music and an improvisational theater performance by local students and residents. Prizes were awarded for answering civil rights trivia questions.

He handed out veterans certificates to James Jordan Jr., Lorenzo Askew and Darren Dix.

Jordan said he served in the Marines from 1983 to 1990, which included service in Operation Desert Storm. He currently works as a security guard and junior varsity basketball coach at Stamford High School.

Leone honored both the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the veterans. “The words of Martin Luther King are so timeless and never get old,” he said. “We should never forget Martin Luther King and also honor the veterans who have served. We recognize their service to our country and everything they have done for the residents of Stamford.”
