A total of 911 free bike helmets will be available for children ages 4-16.

A limited number of helmets sized for toddlers also will be available.

The event will include demonstrations of a K9 police dog and its handler and a bike rodeo.

The Lower Fairfield County Food Bank will have a truck on-site to accept donations.

“If this campaign can prevent just one child from experiencing severe head injuries, including brain trauma, all of the volunteer work and contributions made by Stamford Police officers to distribute over 35,000 bike helmets over many years makes this all worthwhile,” said Todd Lobraico, president of the Stamford Police Association, in a press release. “That positive impact would mean the world to one local family; that’s our goal and what this event is all about.”

Now-retired Stamford Police Officer Glenn Coppola, along with his wife Peggy, started the bike helmet giveaway in 1995.

Their son, Timothy, died at the age of 10. Nearly two years before, he had suffered severe brain damage after riding his bicycle without a helmet.

This year’s bike helmet giveaway will be from 9 a.m. to noon at the Fairway Market, 699 Canal St., Stamford.
