“It’s the beginning of our Christmas season,” Meg Kelley, said of why she has participated in the event for the past five years.

The 60 or so participants will enter into one of nine categories: newcomer, traditional, silver and/or gold, New England seaside, my favorite things, winter wonderland, my homeland, religious and designer’s choice.

While each wreath has to fall into one of the categories, everyone adds their own personal taste to it.

Marguerite Hajjar, who was making her first wreath in the contest, didn’t buy anything, but found little ornaments in her house and decided to put them in hers. “I’ll throw a couple more in and see how it goes,” the self-proclaimed novice said.

“It matches the shutters on my house,” Kelley said of her red and gold ornaments and bows she was adding to the wreath.

Ginny Fox and Ricki Miller both go to stores and find ornaments and ribbons to put on their wreaths.

“You find fun things,” Miller said, “Everything I bought I am throwing in.”

“You pick whatever hits you,” Fox said.

Helping out the garden club once again this year was Iris Oliveira, a Brazilian floral designer, who worked with the participants Monday night to bring their ideas to life on their wreathes.

Each Shippan resident is asked to participate in making either a wreath or a wreath and door garland to decorate their house and take part in the contest.

The judging will take place on Thursday morning.
