“I like it, it’s more streamlined,” Morrell said about the makeover as he finished his meal at the East Main Street McDonald’s outlet near Exit 9 in Stamford. “It’s a bit more hip. The other one is antiquated; out with the old and in with the new.”
The fast-food figurehead is ditching his yellow jumpsuit in favor of a red blazer and red-colored bow tie, a striped red and white rugby shirt and short yellow pants. However, the oversized red shoes stay.
The fashionista’s new wardrobe was designed by Broadway costume designer Ann Hould-Ward, who won a Tony Award for “Beauty and the Beast.”
McDonald’s said Ronald McDonald will be a frequent user of social media, announcing, “Selfies…here I come,” in a nod to the photographic fad.
Ronald McDonald has deep roots for the fast-food chain. Television weatherman Willard Scott first portrayed Ronald in 1963.
Morrell, who is a professional musician with the harmonica his instrument of choice, says it’s necessary to stay current.
“It’s time for a change, Burger King got rid of the king,” he said. “I liked him but some people thought he was kind of creepy.”
Morrell, 61, said he’s a frequent McDonald’s customer.
“I go for the specials. If it is not on sale I don’t go,” he said.
Before heading across the street to jump on his bus, Morrell brought out his harmonica and blasted out a quick tune.
