February 10, 2011
Dear Letter to the Editor:
A wonderful event took place on Thursday, February 10, 2011, in the City of Stamford. Close to 1,000 City preschool children from the Childcare Learning Centers and Sacred Heart School attended a performance of the renowned childrens author Eric Carles The Very Hungry Caterpillar at the Palace Theater. The Mermaid Theater of Nova Scotia performed a remarkable puppet performance of Eric Carles famous stories.
The Stamford community at large should be proud of their collaborative efforts that made todays experience for our youngest children a reality. It took the city-wide cooperation of many people and organizations to send these children to this wonderful performance at the Palace Theater.
Exposing our Citys youngest to the wonderful cultural opportunities available in Stamford is one example of the many good things that happen in our community.
The Palace Theater provided the performance at a discounted ticket price; First Student Bus Company with the help of Steve Schneider, the Stamford Public Schools Transportation Director accomplished getting 22 bus loads of children to and from their schools safely; the staff at the Palace Theater negotiated getting children in their seats; teachers at CLC and Sacred Heart who accompanied children safely to and from; Fairway Market donated 1,000 bags of individually wrapped apples for snacks; The Ferguson Library hosted a fundraiser in the fall to assist in raising funds for the purchase of tickets, and finally Pitney Bowes, NBC Universal, The Stamford School Readiness Foundation and countless individuals contributed significant financial donations.
Today demonstrated how much good the Stamford community is capable of doing when it works together. Through partnership we were able to provide close to one thousand Stamford children with a learning experience that they will not forget. I want to extend my sincere gratitude to all of the partners who helped bring joy to so many of our children.
Sincerely,
Michael A. Pavia
Mayor
