Stamford Local Learns Human Resources as an Adult

Before she received her certification from the University of Bridgeport’s accelerated adult IDEAL Program, Helen Boyke was uncertain about human resources.

“Human Resource personnel always get a bad rap as if they never get back to you and drag their feet. I wanted to reinvent that and dispel those rumors,” said the Stamford resident.

After receiving her degree in 2010, Boyke set out to do just that as a staffing specialist for the management service company Pitney Bowes. There, she reviews the resumes of potential employment candidates, interviews them for open positions and facilitates their integration into the company once they are hired. Boyke says she enjoys acting as a representative for Pitney Bowes.

“I like how I am the face of the organization for those candidates and that I’m the first person they meet in the company,” she added.

Boyke attributes much of her success to the skills she learned while attending classes at the University of Bridgeport.

“It was a different experience going through the IDEAL Program than when I went to school traditionally,” she said. “I made really great friends and stayed in contact with a lot of the faculty members.”

And she isn't planning on stopping her education anytime soon. She is now at Manhattanville College in Purchase completing her master’s degree in human resources and plans to get her Ph.D after that.

“I thought, ‘This is where I need to be,’ and it feels right because I’ve learned so much,” added Boyke.
