The volunteer-run program was started in 2006 and has helped teach English to more than 1,200 people, 30 percent of whom have gone on to community college, a release from the Ferguson Library said. The library was assisted in starting the program by the Library Services and Technology Act grant.
The program is modeled after best practices found by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages and was started to help people build English conversational and literacy skills, the release said. Students are tested at the start of the semester and then split up between basic, beginners, moderate, and advanced, and then given exams to gauge progress. The classes are monitored by the librarians.
The main and South End branches both hold the “Let’s Talk” program.
