Stamford Kiwanis Launches Major Expansion

STAMFORD, Conn. – The Stamford Kiwanis Club has installed new officers and launched a campaign to more than double its membership in the next half-dozen years. The new officers, installed earlier this month, are Joseph Somma, president; C. Thomas Whitehouse, as vice president; Christopher Tasik, treasurer, and Maria Fiori, secretary.

One of their first priorities will be the “100 by 100” campaign, in which the club hopes to expand membership from 47 to 100 by its 100th anniversary, a press release said. The club will celebrate its 95th aniversary in July of 2012.

Somma has already announced the addition of one new member, the Stamford YMCA. He expects another five to join by the end of the month. There will also be an initiative to sign up the relatives of members at 50 percent discount on dues, Somma said in the release.

On Oct. 19, the Kiwanis Club will hold its first night meeting so that people who work out of town can become active members in the club. The night meeting will be the third Wednesday of every month, the release said.

“We are the place to be for community service in Stamford,” said Tasik said, the club's immediate past president. The release noted that over the past couple of years the club has renovated the kitchen and library of the Boys and Girls Club and distributed books to Stamford kindergartners
