STAMFORD, Conn. — Newtown residents will be getting some relief from Stamford less than a week since the shooting in Newtown left 28 dead, including 20 children and six faculty members at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

The Stamford Museum & Nature Center will welcome Newtown residents at no charge to get away from the scene of tragedy. Free admission will last until Dec. 31, and a driver’s license is needed to enter for free.

“It was the least we could do,” said Robin Wexler, director of Media Relations & Marketing for the nature center. “We hope to provide an escape to a beautiful place.”

People will be able to walk around the farm, hike in the woods, climb on Nature’s Playground and visit “All Aboard,” the nature center’s current display that features LEGO trainscapes and gingerbread exhibitions, a release said. It is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. except on Christmas, when it is closed.

Black Bear Saloon and Bar Q will be helping the victims by raising money for the Sandy Hook School Support Fund on Thursday from 5 to 10 p.m. Money will be raised through the sale of $10 wrist bands, and the staff of both locations will be donating all of their tips to the fund.

“We just wanted to help out in some way,” said Kelly Arszyla, sales and events manager for Bar Q and Black Bear Saloon, adding that a couple of the employees live near Newtown, “Everyone was pretty heartbroken up by it.”

The two restaurants will offer a complimentary buffet from 6 to 8 p.m. and a free drink to each customer. There also will be $3 well drinks and $3 Bud Light drafts during the fundraiser.
