Stamford, Greenwich Groups Look To Raise PTSD Awareness

STAMFORD, Conn. -- To bring greater awareness to the issue of Post Traumatic Stress, the U.S. Senate has designated June 27 as National PTSD Awareness Day.

Greenwich-based Stand For The Troops Foundation and Stamford Elks Lodge #899 are hosting a community free reception from 4-6 p.m. June 27  at the Stamford Elks Lodge #899, 943 Hope St., Stamford. It will salute and support veterans who survived the rigors of war only to lose their way back home due to the invisible wounds of Post Traumatic Stress and Traumatic Brain Injury, according to a press release.

With one in five soldiers and Marines returning from Iraq and Afghanistan affected by combat-related PTSD and 22 vets committing suicide every day, SFTT’s rescue coalition is focused on helping our most at-risk veterans get the timely treatment they need to survive and transition back to their families and communities, according to a press release.

The coalition works to remove the stigma by raising awareness, providing pro bono treatments, supporting other treatment protocols and establishing a modular pilot program for replication across the country, according to a press release.

The Elks have a long tradition of supporting veterans, including a grant to SFTT that will make it possible for a Connecticut veteran to enter a PTSD "battle buddies" program that pairs, trains and supports medical alert service PTSD therapy dogs and veterans struggling with PTSD, according to a press release.
