Stamford Girls Heading To Prom Can 'Say Yes To The Dress' For Free

STAMFORD, Conn. -- Teenage girls in Stamford worried about the high cost of prom will be able to get a dress free of charge as the dancing season comes closer.

The annual "Handled With Care Dress Boutique" organized by the non-profit Kids Helping Kids will see hundreds of teens browse through new or gently used prom, homecoming, bridesmaid and evening wear for girls aged 13 to 19 years of age.

At the annual "Handled With Care Dress Boutique" organized by the nonprofit Kids Helping Kids, hundreds of teens will browse through new or gently used prom dresses, homecoming dresses, bridesmaid dresses and evening wear for girls ages 13 to 19.

The picking, choosing and trying on will occur Friday at the Boys & Girls Club of Stamford at 347 Stillwater Ave., from 6 to 9 p.m.

Lexi Kelley, 18, the founder of Kids Helping Kids and the 2015 Newtown Act of Kindness Award recipient, said nearly 200 teenage girls were served last year with free formal wear.

“It’s really exceptional that so many people throughout the community were willing to donate, giving the girls the opportunity to feel unique and beautiful,” Kelley said.

The teens who attend the event will be asked to write down something small that they, in turn, will do for others in exchange for the dresses. These pledges will be hung up on a board to illustrate the ripple effect of giving back that Kids Helping Kids wants to encourage.

“It’s one thing to do something nice for someone else, and it’s another thing to start a chain effect of kindness,” Kelley said. “This way, both the giver and the recipient of kindness feel empowered.”

Additionally, this year Kids Helping Kids is providing the teens with makeup artists and photographers to take pictures to record the events forever.
