After previously rating all towns and cities along the same criteria, the magazine decided to separate its rankings for this year's list based on the median price of a house.
It also weighed crime rates, graduation rates, the equalized mill rate, PIC rating, the number of restaurants that made the publications "Best Restaurants" list and voter turnout when determining the ranking.
Thanks in part to the lowest crime rate and best economy among the eight cities in the state, Stamford edged Norwalk as best and Danbury came in third among cities.
Fairfield County dominated in the towns category, with Ridgefield, Darien, New Canaan, Wilton, Greenwich, Weston and Westport ranked first through seventh, respectively, in towns with a median house price of $300,000 or higher.
