STAMFORD, Conn. -- St. Bridget of Ireland Roman Catholic Church in Stamford will celebrate its 50th anniversary Sunday with a family picnic for parish members from 1 to 5 p.m. on the church grounds, 278 Strawberry Hill Road.
More than 400 members of St. Bridget are expected to attend. The day will be filled with food, games and entertainment.
St. Bridget of Ireland was established Sept. 7, 1963, the Most Rev. Walter C. Curtis, bishop of Bridgeport at the time. Construction of the church began that same year and dedication of St. Bridget’s Chapel-Auditorium-School occurred in 1965. Over time, two shrines have been added to the church grounds: Our Lady of Strawberry Hill in 2003 and the Shrine to Padre Pio in 2004.
The pastors have been the Rev. Thomas P. Guinan, 1963-67; the Rev. William A. Nagel, 1967-72; the Rev. John Jazowski, 1972-97; the Rev. Gill C. Babeu, 1997-2012; and the Rev. Ed McAuley Jr., 2012-present.
Today, nearly 750 families call St. Bridget their spiritual and liturgical home.
