Among the dozens of children in attendance with their parents at the Fizz Boom Read event was Clerin John, 10, a Grade 5 student at Newfield School.

Clerin, who said she likes science and is especially interested in chemistry, was impressed with Cohen's experiments.

Cohen, who is based at the Children's Museum in West Hartford, performed a 45-minute science exhibition that entranced his youthful audience.

They flocked to the front of the auditorium and sat on the floor to get a better view of Cohen's experiments as parents and caregivers sat behind them. After the show, Cohen took questions from his young audience.

Despite what many people may think, he said, children are interested in science and don't need prompting to go to his programs.

"Most of the kids they want to come and see the science," Cohen said.

He performs various science-related shows throughout the state with Thursday's presentation concentrating on chemistry-related experiments using liquid nitrogen and combustion.

He said it's always great to meet and interact with children when he goes on the road, except for one thing.

"It's great in every respect except I-95," he joked about the local traffic.
