Smiley will make her only Connecticut appearance at 6:30 p.m. on June 1 at the Ernest A. DiMattia Jr. Building of the Ferguson Library, 1 Public Library Plaza, in Stamford, Conn.

The award-winning author will discuss Early Warning, the second in the Last Hundred Years trilogy that began with Some Luck and will span a century in America. It is a multi-generational story of the Langdons, an Iowa farming family and its challenges and rewards in the face of turbulent times.

Early Warning opens as the country moves out of post–World War II optimism and through the darker landscape of the Cold War and the social and sexual revolutions of the 1960s and 70s, and then into the unprecedented wealth -- for some -- of the early 1980s.

Smiley is the author of numerous novels, including A Thousand Acres, which was awarded the Pulitzer Prize, as well as five works of nonfiction and a series of books for young adults. In 2001, she was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and in 2006 she received the PEN Center USA Lifetime Achievement Award for Literature.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. for a wine reception with appetizers provided by Amore Restaurant and Tropical Smoothie Café. Tickets are $15. All proceeds benefit the Ferguson Library.
