Westport resident Lawrence Saperstein, a nuclear radiologist, said he came up with the idea for Zyta-C because he was prone to debilitating colds that would last for weeks. So, he did what he does best: research.

The product worked so well  -- he hasn't had a cold since taking it five years ago -- he and his wife, Amy, decided to make it for others. This, after gathering a group of preschool moms in Westport to help taste-test various flavors. ("It tastes good," said Amy, of the citrus flavor.)

Technically, Zyta-C is a liposomal Vitamin C and zinc supplement that supports your immune system, helps fight cold and flu symptoms and gives energy without caffeine, he explained.

"Liposomal Vitamin C and liposomal zinc are essential to optimal health," said Dr. Saperstein. “Liposomes are scientifically proven to improve nutrient absorption."

Another benefit: the product helps reduce fine lines and wrinkles.

Many runners and triathletes like it, too as, taken on a daily basis, it gives a boost of energy and -- thanks to the zinc -- aids in muscle recovery.

It is sold locally at Stew Leonard’s, Colonial Druggist and Shoreline Integrative Pharmacy in Westport, Trumbull Pharmacy, Lang's Pharmacy in Weston and at Unity Pharmacy in Fairfield, with the goal of expanding nationally. It is also sold online via the product's website and on Amazon.

While spreading the word about Zyta-C is mission number one, the Sapersteins -- Amy runs the company while Lawrence works at Yale -- there is conversation (and development) on several other liposomal-based supplements.

Zyta-C, said Dr. Saperstein, has changed his life. He not only feels great, but has great satisfaction hearing from others who have also cut short or eliminated their debilitating colds based on his product.

Said Dr. Saperstein of the product he initially created with only himself in mind: "My wife, Amy, thought we should share it and help make the world a healthier place."
