Macari started his advocacy for individuals with developmental disabilities while volunteering in the concession stand at the Connecticut Special Olympics over 25 years ago. He joined Always Reaching for Independence (ARI) in the mid-1980s. He was an active member of its board and eventually became its president.

During the past several years, Macari has worked with lawmakers developing plans and strategies to meet the challenges brought on by state and federal budget cuts. He currently serves as President of Friends of ARI, which is an organization managing assets and property for ARI. He is also a member of the Board of the Stamford Family YMCA.

In his speech, Macari thanked the North Stamford Exchange Club for its longstanding relationship with ARI, including both monetary support and assistance in building a patio for one of their group homes. He also acknowledged the importance of community service organizations such as the Exchange Club to charitable organizations in today's economic landscape, where everyone is trying to do more with less.

The award presentation was attended by Paul, his wife Patty, and both of their mothers.
