The fundraiser will honor the New Canaan Kiwanis Club with a Community Leadership Award for its many generous donations to Thorpe over the years.
“We have a great evening planned for a great cause,” said Wronski, a volunteer for Thorpe since her college days at Fordham University. “We are so grateful for all the support we have received so far. We hope everyone turns out on April 24 for the children and families of Thorpe.”
A second citation, Thorpe’s Community Service Award, will be presented to Chris Otis and the St. Aloysius Youth Ministry. Under Otis’ leadership, teenagers from St. Aloysius Church have hosted Thorpe families in New Canaan and performed volunteer work for Thorpe families.
Homeless families in transition live at Thorpe’s shelter on Crotona Avenue; residents live at a permanent supportive housing program on East 184th Street and Park Avenue.
The fundraiser will feature live entertainment from Pink Baby, the “little band” that injects the pop, country and rock songs people love with its own organic, acoustic spin; and Nanny Assis, an award-winning Brazilian guitarist and singer.
Catering will be provided by New Canaan’s Susan Goodman. Matt Murray, also a longtime New “Canaanite,” will emcee the evening.
An auction will be one of the evening’s highlights thanks to the support of local businesses, artists and friends of Thorpe. Some of the donated items include roundtrip air tickets on Jet Blue; a private tour for 10 at New Canaan’s Glass House, including a champagne toast; a membership in Vermont’s Hermitage Club, a private ski mountain; a New Canaan YMCA family membership; a Miller Lacrosse party for 20 with game theater trailer; one week on Martha’s Vineyard at a private home; an original, framed still-life painting in oil; and tickets for performances at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center.
Thorpe Family Residence was founded over 25 years ago by the Dominican Sisters of Sparkill, N.Y. Today, Thorpe is managed by Nazareth Housing Inc., a provider of supportive and permanent housing for families in need.
The Dominican Sisters will be honored at the April 24 fundraiser for their lifelong commitment to the people of the South Bronx.
