Driving down Main Street, you can’t miss the six-foot-tall, handpainted fiberglass lighthouses dotting the side of the roadway.
Light the Way is the latest installment in the new town tradition of outdoor artwork on display for residents and visitors to admire. Similar to the fanciful CowParade exhibitions so popular in 79 cities and counting, the lighthouse project seeks to celebrate local artists and enhance downtown and promote it as a tourist destination.
The Stratford Street Sculpture committee of the town’s Arts Commission directed the project. The committee also came up with the Share a Chair exhibition of whimsical painted benches in 2015.
The 20 lighthouses will be up all summer. As the weather gets cooler, they will be auctioned off and a portion of the proceeds will go to charity.
