Letter: Connecticut Could Use a Guy Like Scott Walker

To the Editor:

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker was the keynote speaker at the annual Prescott Bush Awards Dinner on Monday and addressed a sold out crowd with his message of optimism, relevance and courage. It was a model that we sure could use here in Connecticut (and Washington, D.C., for that matter).

Since Gov. Walker took office, his bold reforms have eliminated a $3.6 billion budget deficit without raising taxes, have given school districts and local governments the tools to balance their budgets without massive layoffs seen in other states and, in doing so, saved Wisconsin taxpayers over $1 billion.

Before he took office, his state was ranked near the bottom on finance and job creation with only 10 percent of businesses saying the state was headed in the right direction. Sound familiar? During his administration, Wisconsin has significantly changed course, now ranking in the top 20 with approximately 94 percent of businesses in his state now saying things are headed in the right direction.

The current one party rule in Hartford and Democratic “leadership” across Connecticut believe you measure the success of government by how many citizens are dependent upon it. Gov. Walker and the Connecticut Republican Party believe the opposite.

Optimism for the future can be gained by looking to what bold leaders of the past have done. Relevance is reflected in the message that true prosperity comes when you empower people to take control of their own destiny and it requires courage to take the unpopular steps to restore a state (or country) to the right path.
