When Tiffany Vizzo arrived at Cove Island Park on Sunday afternoon to see hundreds of people in support of her, she was understandably a little overwhelmed. Vizzo was diagnosed with follicular non-Hodgkin's lymphoma last year, just weeks after giving birth to twins. The flood of support for Vizzo, a Greenwich resident, culminated in the three-mile walk/run "Together for Tiffany" to help defray the costs of medical expenses and taking care of her two young children.
"I'm so incredibly grateful for this," Vizzo said holding back tears. "It means a lot to me. I hope this inspires other people to show that with the support of family and friends, you can make it through something like this."
The event was the result of almost a year of planning on the part of Torey Vizzo Strauser, Tiffany's husband's cousin. Strauser and her relatives began by simply telling Tiffany's story. Then the idea of the race came, which attracted participants and donors from all over the country.
"There are a lot of people here we don't even know," Strauser said. "We have people here from as far as Hawaii, Louisiana, and California. All of us are so appreciative for this kind of support. We're so happy we were able to put all of this together.
Vizzo and her husband Steven greeted well-wishers with their two children before the start of the race. They even participated in the walk themselves. The race featured runners, walkers, kids on bikes, friends, family and complete strangers. Strauser said they may hold the event again next year for a general fund-raiser for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.
"Tiffany is so special. She's really incredible," Strauser said. "When people hear a story like hers, they just wanted to help."
