STAMFORD, Conn. -- Happy Birthday To Stamford’s Joe Lieberman!

Joseph Isadore "Joe" Lieberman, who has owned a home in Stamford, turns 72 on Monday. The United States Senator was born February 24, 1942, in Stamford, CT.

He was elected as a "reform Democrat" in 1970 to the Connecticut Senate, where he served three terms as Majority Leader and also served as state Attorney General from 1983 to 1989.

He defeated moderate Republican Lowell Weicker in 1988 to win election to the Senate and was re-elected in 1994 and 2000.

He was the Democratic nominee for Vice President in the 2000 United States presidential election,  becoming the first Jewish candidate on a major American political party presidential ticket.

In 2008, he received the U.S. Senator John Heinz Award for Greatest Public Service by an Elected or Appointed Official.

As Senator he introduced and championed the Don't Ask, Don't Tell Repeal Act of 2010and legislation that led to the creation of the Department of Homeland Security.

He is the author of seven books: The Power Broker (1966), The Scorpion and the Tarantula (1970), The Legacy (1981), Child Support in America (1986), In Praise of Public Life (2000); An Amazing Adventure (2003), and The Gift of Rest: Rediscovering the Beauty of the Sabbath (2011). Following his retirement from the Senate, he became senior counsel of the white collar criminal defense and investigations practice at a law firm in New York City.
