Cobb, who went to school in Stamford, turns 59 on Wednesday. The football linebacker and radio personality was born March 16, 1957, in Carthage, N.C.

He played college football at the University of Southern California, where he was on two Rose Bowl Championship teams and one National Championship team and was selected All-Pac-10 Conference in 1978. After graduation, Cobb was offered contracts by the California Angels and Chicago Cubs baseball teams but opted to play professional football instead.

Drafted in 1979 by the Dallas Cowboys, he went on to play 11 years in the NFL with the Detroit Lions, the Philadelphia Eagles and the Cowboys. He was traded from Detroit to Philadelphia in 1985.

After his retirement from football, he became a television and radio personality in the Philadelphia area and earned the nickname "G Cobb." His trademark radio show expression has become "G Cobb in the House!"

In 1997, he became a sports reporter with CBS 3’s Eyewitness News Team and remained for several years. In July 2007, he began writing Eagles columns for The Bulletin, a daily newspaper in Philadelphia.

He is the author of the book "Don't Be Clueless: 7 Keys to Life in the Real World."

He is now the principal operator of G Cobb Publishing and manages a Philadelphia sports information website known as GCobb.Com.

In February 2014, he expressed interest in running as a Republican for the U.S. House of Representatives.
