Fairfield Treasurer Advocates for Library, Seniors

FAIRFIELD, Conn. — Armed with a wealth of financial experience, Fairfield Town Treasurer Helen D’Avanzo is helping draw up a plan she hopes to push to the top of residents’ reading lists.

The Library Board of Trustees is proposing to demolish and rebuild the Fairfield Woods Branch Library, D'Avanzo said. The cost of the project, which will include a 24,000-square-foot facility on Fairfield Woods Road, is currently tagged at $13 million.

“For a lot of people, it is a tough time for money,” she said. “I think I bring something to the table in terms of navigating the process.”

Prior to starting her term as town treasurer for Fairfield, D'Avanzo served on its Board of Finance and before that she was an auditor and administrator for the Internal Revenue Service.

She pointed out that the current library building is not only too small and has a leaking roof, it’s also not compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act code.

“I love the library and I think this will make me a stronger advocate for them,” she said.

D’Avanzo is on the board of directors for the Friends of the Fairfield Library.

Her volunteer hours aren't limited to the library, though. When she isn’t fulfilling her duties as town treasurer, D’Avanzo uses her financial expertise to help seniors pay their taxes as coordinator for AARP Foundation Tax-Aide.

"It allows me to get to know people," D'Avanzo said. "It's a good fit."

Residents can meet with a representative from the Internal Revenue Service between Feb. 1 and April 15 of each year at the Fairfield Senior Center.
