BRIDGEPORT, Conn. — A 27-year-old Bridgeport woman stole a delivery van filled with bread and led police on a miles-long pursuit, striking four police cars in the process, before she crashed on I-91 in New Haven, state police said.

State police were told at 7:05 a.m. Thursday that a stolen white van that had rammed a Bridgeport police cruiser earlier, was headed north on I-95 near Exit 39.

Troopers attempted to stop the 2008 Freightliner truck with Pennsylvania plates, but the driver would not stop and a pursuit began, state police said.

The van then rammed a state police cruiser north of Exit 41, police said, as the chase continued.

The van traveled up I-95, then north on I-91 in New Haven, before leaving at Exit 12, state police said. The chase spilled onto the streets of North Haven, where the van rammed a North Haven police car, police said.

Eventually, the van re-entered northbound I-91 at Exit 9, where it hit another state police cruiser near Exit 12, police said

The driver then lost control and stuck a guardrail and light pole along I-91, state police said.

The driver, identified as Mercedes Bruno of Bridgeport, was removed from the van and handcuffed, police said.

She was arrested and charged with two counts of assault on a public safety officer, two counts of criminal attempt to commit assault on a public safety officer, second-degree larceny, second-degree criminal trover, reckless endangerment, operating under the influence, reckless driving, engaging police in pursuit, and three counts of evading responsibility.

She was held on $100,000 bond for a court appearance Friday in Bridgeport Superior Court.

Two state troopers and the suspect were taken to the hospital after the incident. The incident caused morning traffic jams, and it took a few hours to clear I-91 after the crash.
