Wusthof Chef Explains The Importance Of The Right Knife

NORWALK, Conn. -- For even the most casual cook, having the right knife can make or break a meal. Dull, wrongly sized or uncomfortable knives can turn chefs from motivated to mad in a few short chops.

That's why when Andrea Arnold, a former restaurateur and Swiss chef, needed quality knives for her kitchen, she turned to Wusthof, which has been producing handcrafted German blades since 1814.

"Wusthof's blades were perfect for my cooking and provided me with the essential knives," said Arnold. "I was never without the necessities."

For home chefs, Arnold recommend three must-have knives: an eight-inch cook's knife, a serrated knife and a paring knife. Each knife is different, and has its own purpose during the meal prep process.

"The cook's knife is the 'workhorse of the kitchen' and will do all your slicing, mincing, dicing and chopping jobs," said Arnold. "The serrated knife is a bit different and acts as a saw," said Arnold. "This is ideal when cutting bread and tomatoes, amongst other things. The paring knife acts as a small cook's knife and is ideal for anything requiring precise cutting."

While each knife is different, they all consist of seven fundamental components: the tip, edge, spine, heel, bolster, handle and butt. "It's definitely important to understand the anatomy of the knife before purchasing one," said Arnold."

Inside Wusthof's Norwalk outlet store, chefs can browse a variety of knives, from formal cutlery to folding hunting blades.

“The Wusthof family still produces quality steel products in Solingen, Germany just as they have been doing for over 200 years," said Arnold. "They are built from quality steel and are built to last."

This June, customers can visit Wusthof's Norwalk outlet store to receive up to 70 percent off on certain cutlery products. The one day sale begins June, 17 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
