Stamford Woman Wins 5K As Walk/Run Raises $70K For CancerCare

FAIRFIELD Conn. -- More than 300 CancerCare friends and supporters joined together for the 2015 Fairfield Walk/Run for Hope at Jennings Beach, raising more than $70,000.

The monies raised will support CancerCare’s vital and free programs and services for those affected by cancer. 

The Men’s 5K winner Joel Bender of Bedford, N.Y., finished with a time of 18:35.20, and Emily Walgenbach of Stamford won the Women’s 5K with a time of 23:18.00. 

David Pearlstone of Easton, Diane Pincus of Bedford, N.Y. and Erin Hunt of Norwalk were the event's highest individual fundraisers, and Booze Houndz was the highest fundraising team. 

Kicking off the event, Megan Watts of Fairfield shared her powerful story of how CancerCare helped her family cope following her mother’s cancer diagnosis. From healing through an arts and crafts support group to a mother-daughter trip to New York, CancerCare created “opportunities to make great memories with my family in a supportive environment,” said Watts. 

CancerCare is the leading national organization providing free, professional support services and information to help people manage the emotional, practical and financial challenges of cancer. CancerCare’s comprehensive services include counseling and support groups over the phone, online and in-person, educational workshops, publications and financial and co-payment assistance.
