The Solarize Stamford Workshop will be on Wednesday, Jan. 29, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. There, you can meet Stamford's three chosen installers, learn about solar systems and the Solarize Stamford programs.

If you bring an electric bill and have a basic idea of your electric needs, the installers will be able to tell if you can significantly reduce your bill and estimate how long your payback period will be.

You should also know how close to due South your roof faces or if you have an open space around your home for a possible ground-mount installation. If possible, take a picture of your southern view to see if trees may create a shading issue.

On Thursday, Feb. 20, the three installers will be back for a question and answer session specifically about the affordability of solar electricity.

There you can bring questions about your home's solar installation proposal to pick the financing option that best suits your needs.

Buying or leasing is the main decision you will face. Buying a system outright will save you more money in the long run, but leasing means you put no money down.

By signing up with Solarize Stamford you could reduce installation costs by 20 percent or more. To participate in the program you must have a signed contract with an installer by Tuesday, April 15.

Both workshops will be held in the Stamford Museum and Nature Center's Great Hall in the Bendel Mansion Museum Building. It is located at 39 Scofieldtown Road in Stamford.
