The Southern Connecticut Gas Company has issued an alert in Fairfield of its upcoming plans to upgrade the existing natural gas mains in the beach neighborhood. The project began on Monday, June 11 and it should be completed next spring.

Officials noted that the existing mains in the area are typically more than 70 years old, are low pressure, and are cast iron pipes, which can be brittle. The Southern Connecticut Gas Company will be replacing the antiquated pipes with higher pressure, smaller diameter PVC pipes. This is the current industry standard and according to Southern Connecticut Gas Company officials, which will improve performance and reliability.

The work will require excavations in the town road for the main gas line and for the individual home services. The Fairfield Public Works Department will be overseeing the excavation along with the temporary and permanent pavement restoration work. The Fairfield Police Department will be overseeing traffic control during all of the construction work.

Work was scheduled to begin this week on Reef Road. The work on several roadways is expected to continue throughout 2018 and in some cases is expected to last until the spring of next year.
