Cutting The Cost Of College: Norwalk Foundation Helps Students In Need

DARIEN, Conn. -- For many teens, college education isn't an option simply based on not being able to afford the cost. Luckily, the Norwalk Housing Foundation is working to help teens find ways to afford the cost of college and continue their success in school.

The Norwalk Housing Authority, which provides affordable housing to over 2,000 families in Connecticut, created the Norwalk Housing Foundation in 1998. The foundation is a nonprofit organization that raises money for college scholarships and other educational services for Norwalk Housing Authority families. Their mission is to help public housing residents achieve academic preparation, excellence and a college degree.

Since its inception, the foundation has awarded approximately $840,000 across 318 scholarships to 167 students. The only public housing authority in Connecticut to offer a scholarship program, the foundation encourages learning and development through a support structure embedded into the program. They offer many educational initiatives including early childhood, through primary education programs and learning centers that operate throughout the subsidized housing community.

In an effort to positively impact students in Connecticut, Darien Rowayton Bank recently donated $1,000 towards the Norwalk Housing Foundation's College Scholarship Program. "Since I have learned more about this program and the opportunity it affords the less fortunate population in our community, we wanted to contribute in any way we could," said Kaye Leong, assistant treasurer at Darien Rowayton Bank.

The Norwalk Housing Authority and the Foundation will be holding its College Scholarship Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, June 20 at 6 p.m. at Stepping Stones Museum for Children. "We encourage anybody to come out and support this great cause, as we watch students get the opportunity to pursue their dreams," said Leong.
