Churches handed out palm branches to parishioners on Sunday to mark the event, with some twisting the fronds into the shape of a cross. After the palms were blessed by priests and pastors, churchgoers took them home.

On Palm Sunday, Christians celebrate the triumphal entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem, where crowds greeted him by waving palm branches and covering his path with palm branches, according to Gospel readings in the Bible.

But Christians also believe the triumphant week also marks the beginning of his journey to the cross and his death on Good Friday. His resurrection from the dead is celebrated on Easter Sunday, the holiest day of the year for Christians.
