Friday, Sept. 27

Astronomy Nights: Life in the Universe: 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Explore the night sky, planets, stars, and more by heading to the observatory. Enjoy a presentation on life in the universe, followed by a visit to view the night sky through the Observatory's research telescope. Members: Free ; Non-Members: Adults $3, Children (5-17) $2. Saturday, Sept. 28

Genealogy Research: 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Explore genealogy databases to find census, military, birth and death records. Free. Ferguson Library, Intersection of Broad and Bedford Streets.

Paella 101 with Chef Scott: 2:00 p.m. Learn to make Paella dish and pair it with some of the fantastic Spanish wines. $45 per person, plus tax and gratuity. Barcelona Stamford, 222 Summer Street.

Illuminate WP: 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  A full day workshop on an interactive, engaging, and comprehensive WordPress learning wherein every component of the core WordPress functionality will be covered, including basic SEO strategies. $349. Stamford BBYO Connect Cruise: 8:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. The BBYO Connect programming year will feature a cruise on Long Island Sound. There will be Sound for music, dancing and meeting new friends. $25. Stamford JCC, 1035 Newfield Avenue. 

Nature-Based Birthday Parties Saturday: 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Nature based birthday parties including age-appropriate activities for children ages 3 – 12  on four nature inspired themes: Green Gardener, Underground Investigation, Reptiles and Amphibians, and Nature Art. Sunday, Sept. 29

Bartlett Arboretum Guided Tours: 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Learn how to harvest herbs and put an Herb Garden to bed for the winter conducted by Master Gardener members of the Herb Group. This tour is not recommended for children 8 and under. Members free non-members free with gate admission. Bartlett Arboretum, 151 Brookdale Road.

Dramatic Poetry Recital: 2:00 p.m. Poetry readings in English and Spanish by La Tertulia. Free. Ferguson Library,Intersection of Broad and Bedford Streets.

Treetops Chamber Music Society Concert: 4:00 p.m. The program is built around Kenneth Frazelle's "Songs in the Rearview Mirror," a song cycle for mezzo soprano and piano. The concert features mezzo soprano Kathryn Findlen, pianist Richard Masters and artistic director, clarinetist Oskar Espina Ruiz. $30 for subscribers; single tickets are $45; discounts for students and families are available. Youth Basketball Clinic with the UConn Women’s Basketball Team: 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Children will learn fundamental basketball skills from current UConn Women’s Basketball players. Boys and girls ages 7 to 16. $40. Stamford Jewish Community Center, 1035 Newfield Avenue. 

An Afternoon of Song - from Broadway to the Met: 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. A benefit concert for seniors, where favorite local singers - Allegra Themmen, Jennifer Foster, Jodi Maxner, Daniel Hague and Daniel Juarez - perform a wide range of musical entertainment, from opera to musical theater, light opera and Broadway show tunes. $29. Parent / Child Pottery Weekend Workshop - Hand Building / Sculpting: 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Share the joy of creativity and imagination with children. Spend 2-1/2 hours side-by-side learning the basic skills needed to construct a beautiful clay project. The workshop includes a demonstration and hands-on clay experience. $75 per person including material and firing fees for one project. Sunday Explorers: Noon  to 4:00 p.m. Join in to a drop-in program for hikes, field studies, live animal visits, garden experiences and crafts, and explore all the best things about SMNC in the fall.
