STAMFORD, Conn. -- Laurel House, based in Stamford, will be holding its annual Champions for Recovery Dinner Dance on Saturday, April 2, at the Stamford Yacht Club.

The evening will support Laurel House's work in providing critical programs and services both to those living with mental illness and also to their families. Laurel House will also honor Dr. Sigurd Ackerman, Silver Hill Hospital's president and medical director, as its 2016 Champion for Recovery.

Ackerman is being recognized for his work in the field of psychiatric research and treatment. During his 13 years of leadership at Silver Hill Hospital, he has been instrumental in the development of new programs for the treatment of psychotic, mood, eating and substance use disorders.

The event will feature cocktails, a silent auction, and dinner and dancing to the sounds of James Daniel Entertainment.

Laurel House will also recognize five Town Champions for their work, advocacy and outreach, making their towns better places in which to live and work. The 2016 Town Champions are:

  • New Canaan -- Judy Bentley, advocate for senior healthcare and housing
  • Stamford/Westport -- Ross Burkhardt, president and CEO, New Neighborhoods, Inc.
  • Greenwich -- William Galvin III, church and community leader, Family ReEntry, vice chair
  • Norwalk -- Dr. David Levinson, president, Norwalk Community College
  • Darien -- Susan Marks, Darien Board of Selectmen

Laurel House is grateful to its honorees for helping give visibility to the need for increased access to mental health services. The organization states that, in Fairfield County alone, nearly 57,000 adults and children are living with a mental health disorder -- but many are not receiving treatment.

The evening will begin at 6 p.m. and end around 10 p.m. The yacht club is located at 97 Ocean Dr. West, Stamford. To buy tickets or for more information, contact Barbara Rossi at 203-324-7734 or brossi@laurelhouse.net. You can also buy tickets online, here.
