STAMFORD, Conn. -- The City of Stamford was honored as a silver recipient at the Clean Energy Communities program.

Stamford was honored for being the sixth city in the country to achieve 2030 District Designation, for being a partner in the U.S. Department of Energy Grant program Rooftop Solar Challenge and for converting street lights to LEDs.

Nine percent of Stamford homes and 11 percent of businesses have participated in residential energy-saving programs. Additionally, solar photovoltaic systems were installed at Rogers International Environmental Magnet School and Scofield Middle School.

The Clean Energy Communities program is an Energize Connecticut initiative that incentivizes towns and cities to support renewable and efficient energy.

The ceremony was highlighted by keynote speaker Lynne Hamjian, deputy director of the office of ecosystem protection for the Environmental Protection Agency in New England. Connecticut Energy and Environmental Protection Commissioner Robert Klee was also in attendance to congratulate the participants.
