The couple was on their way to Mount Auburn Hospital after the mother's water broke on the night of June 14, the father told the Somerville Police Department.
"Along the way we called the hospital for help and got disconnected," he explained. "Distracted, I missed [my] exit and found myself taking 99 to new route for [the] hospital."
The man pulled over and told police that his wife was in labor and about to give birth. That's when Lt. Carmine Vivolo, Officer Reece and Officer Dylan Lambert quickly transitioned to help the get the woman to the hospital.
When they realized she wasn't going to make it, the officers jumped into action to help successfully deliver the baby girl. The couple said they were extremely relieved and grateful for the response from Somerville's finest.
"With luck on my side Lt Carmine and his crew being there at the right time and the right place was able to deliver my beautiful daughter," the father told the department "I am gratefully thankful and honored to have had someone like Lt. Carmine to deliver my baby. We will be forever in his debt."
Somerville Fire Department Lt. Alcaraz was also present and helped with the birth. An ambulance eventually arrived on scene where crews continued providing aid to the mom and child, who was brought into the world at 11:05 p.m.
"I am so proud of our SPD," one Facebook user wrote. "They did a job well done and brought the baby into this world safe. Congratulations to the new parents and to everyone involved."
"Typical job well done by the SPD and the SFD," another user said. "We are all proud of you."
